The End Is Nigh Rorschach
Watchmen: The End is Nigh Part 1 takes place more than a decade before the film's main story, delving into the partnership of urban vigilantes Rorschach and Nite Owl before the hero-banning Keene Act. Interactive 's Watchmen: The End is Nigh is caught in the awkward place between being a comic book game and a movie game. This is most visible in the difference between the story cut.

Watchmen is easily one of the most beloved comic book series of all time. It's deserved acclaim and commercial success has led to many different expansions of the universe, such as popular ones like Doomsday Clock and the HBO series, and unpopular ones, like the 2009 video game.Related:When DC released eight limited series titled Before Watchmen, fans had extremely mixed feelings.
It really depends on which series is read, as they vary in quality, but overall they provide an interesting read that I think any Watchmen fan should complete, despite how they feel of some of the revelations the comics make, including contradictions with the original in some cases. The Comedian's death is what sets the mystery of the original Watchmen series, and through flashbacks, we learn a lot more about the 'hero's' life.
He was recruited by the government and served as a sponsored superhero who escaped the jurisdiction of the Keene Act. In the original comic, Comedian makes a joker about JFK's assassination, saying 'don't ask where I was.' .In the movie, Zack Snyder took the implication and went with it, having Comedian shooting JFK in the film's opening crawl. However, Before Watchmen tells a completely different story. Here, Blake is very close with the entire family, playing football with the brothers on the White House lawn and even having deep conversations with Jackie. On 11/22/63, Blake is even in Washington D.C, crying over the death of his friend. 9 The Outer Limits.
The iconic ending to Watchmen is burned into every comic book fan's head. The splash page displaying Ozy's monster sprawled across two pages really showcases how great Dave Gibbons art is. However, the ending is extremely similar to an episode of The Outer Limits. In 1963, 'The Architects of Fear', in which a group of scientists decided to stage an alien attack to encourage humanity to stand together against an unknown threat. Sound familiar?Alan Moore says he came across the episode long after the ending was already planned.
However, fellow comics legend Len Wein says Moore purposefully copied the ending, and his refusal to change it is what led the Swamp Thing writer to leave the series. Wein got the last laugh though, having the episode be the in-universe inspiration to Adrian's plan.
Hooded Justice was the first superhero in the Watchmen universe and a founding member of the Minutemen. To the public, he was in a relationship with Sally Jupiter, the first Silk Spectre, but in secret, he was in a relationship with Captain Metropolis, leader of the Minutemen.Related:The entire Hooded Justice character is further explored in the HBO series, with this being a major detail.
However, once again this is only originally implied in Watchmen, with Hollis Mason saying in his novel that the two act like an old married couple and Hooded Justice was often 'out playing rough with the boys.' 7 The End is Nigh. Rorschach is probably tied with Manhattan for the most popular Watchmen character, and it could be due to how sad his origin was. As a civilian, he is often seen holding a picket sign with the phrase THE END IS NIGH printed across, and it was always just assumed it was nothing more than a part of Kovacs cynical character. The sign actually comes from the minister of a church that Kovacs volunteered at.The minister preached in ways that were very similar to Rorschach's journal entries, and the two were very similar until Rorschach discovered the sinister truth. The minister had been murdering prostitutes and hiding the bodies in the basement, burning them and the church down to hide the evidence.
Rorschach ended up stabbing the minister with his own sign and emerged from the burning building holding the sign that has become synonymous with his character. The Twilight Lady was the leader of a prostitute ring who had sent a picture of herself to Dan Drieberg, the second Nite-Owl. It's assumed she had a crush on him. She again appears in his nuclear dream, then turns into Silk Spectre. It is revealed that they did have a relationship both in and out of costume, something which Hollis was against as Nite Owl being involved with her would ruin the image for the children. She even figured out Dan's secret identity but never revealed it to anyone. She eventually left him, saying he deserved someone better, and Dan tells Laurie she was just some random criminal who took a fancy to him. 5 Doctor Manhattan's New Powers.
Manhattan is known as one of the most powerful comic book characters, and the prequel series explores his concept of time in greater detail. In the process of going over his life, Manhattan decides to try and use his powers, instead of projecting himself into the future, to back himself into the past. It works, and Manhattan is able to see the day of the accident, except there's no accident.Related:His influence on his past allows him to see that every choice he makes as a man has a butterfly effect, and we see tons of alternate histories. These include the Cuban Missile Crisis ending in nuclear warfare, Kennedy surviving the assassination, Reagan being elected president, and dozens of other changes. This leads Manhattan to make a very strange, yet fitting decision.
We actually get to see more of his timeline tweak abilities throughout the events of DC Rebirth and Doomsday Clock. It's like the chicken or the egg question, yet on a cosmic scale. After seeing how every one of his decisions as a man shapes the timeline, Manhattan decides to go into his life and set himself on the path that corresponds with the correct chain of events.
The most important one definitely being that Manhattan created himself. In the original comic, Jon and his coworkers are astounded, saying that the door should not have shut on its own and that there was plenty of time left before the machine started. Now we know why. Manhattan changed the timer from thirty seconds to five seconds. 3 Liquidator. Silhouette was a member of the Minutemen until she was removed from the group for being lesbian. In the original comic, Rorschach says she was murdered by a minor adversary looking for revenge, and in the prequel, we learn this minor adversary is a villain named Liquidator. He murdered Silhouette and her girlfriend.
The Minutemen knew they had to get revenge for their former teammate. Several days later, after word got around that the Liquidator was back in New York, the Minutemen started looking for him and split up into teams. His tracks were found by Hooded Justice and Nite Owl, but when they got there, they found that Sally Jupiter killed him. In the original comic, Rolf Mueller is a circus strongman who disappeared around the same time as Hooded Justice, leading Hollis Mason to believe they were the same person. However, the prequel gives a very different identity to the hero.
Mueller was actually a neo-Nazi who hunted and killed children, hiding their bodies and then leaving them to go on tour with the circus. The Minutemen investigated the case, and Comedian eventually found Mueller and strangled him with a belt. Unfortunately, Nite Owl and Mothman believed that the real Hooded Justice was the killer, and Nite Owl killed his teammate. 1 Under The Hood. Hollis faced a lot of backlash among the superhero community. The original copy went into detail regarding the rape of Sally Jupiter, the relationship between Captain Metropolis and Hooded Justice, and the manslaughter of Hooded Justice.Obviously, by telling the truth, The Comedian was portrayed as a vile, misogynistic psychopath, and he threatened Hollis about releasing the contents of the book, saying that J.
Edgar Hoover did not want these facts to see the light of day. Unfortunately, this meant the book faced a lot of changes, including the idea that Rolf Mueller was Hooded Justice, in order to not let readers know what had actually happened.Next.
(Author'snote:Dear fans,I am aboutto mutilate your fandom and put it through worse torture than what ithas been through before. I am sorry.)'Do it!' Screamed Rorschach.Dr.Manhattan raised his hand, and in a flash of light, the vigilante wasgone. Nothing remained of his existence. Not even a mark on thepristine white snow to prove he had ever existed.'
Howled Dan in pitiful despair. 'You killed him!' 'I didnot do anything,' replied Dr.
Manhattan in his usual even monotone.' Oh,don't give me that whole 'you can't fight fate' crap. Youkilled him!'
He collapsed into a sob.' Actually,I did not do anything at all.' Rorschachfelt a blinding white pain, and fell to the ground.
Of course he wasin pain, he was dying, wasn't he? He thought that the whole processof being obliterated wouldn't take this long though.' He'scoming to.'
Rorschach tried opening his eyes, but all he could seewere indistinct blurs. The mansounded like Dr. Manhattan, but there was something different in hisvoice, an inflection, a feeling. He sounded relieved. He then heardanother voice.'
He felthis hand ball into a fist. He didn't expect Veidt to be relievedthat he was alive. He wondered what they were going to do.He triedsitting up, but he collapsed.'
Take iteasy there, kiddo, you've been through a lot today.' The man whowas obviously not Dr.
Manhattan was supporting him as he tried to setRorschach back down on the floor. He looked about middle aged, withwisps of grey on the sides of his dark hair, and thick, squareglasses. 'By the way, my name's Jon. Jon Osterman.'
Rorschachdidn't know how to exactly respond to that, so he didn't. Jonkept rambling.' Ididn't honestly think this would work, but we did it! The folks atNASA said it wasn't possible, but boy, they're going to bekicking themselves once they find out'Give ittime, Jon. We still need to wait a little longer.' Jon lookedup from his reverie.
He stiffened. 'Oh, of course Adrian.'
Heturned to Rorschach. 'This is Adrian Veidt.
Have you heard of himin your dimension?' Surprised, he gave a curt nod.Jonsmiled. 'That's interesting. Well, we're only going to keep youa few days, and then you can go home.' 'In themean time,' interrupted Adrian, 'You'll receive acomplimentary, all-expenses paid stay at Veidt Towers for the timebeing.'
Rorschachtried getting up again. His knees still felt weak, and his stomachwas still churning, but he was fine. 'Would rather not.'
Adriangave him a contemptuous smile, full of arrogance, Rorschach thought.' He flippeda switch on the wall, and a yellow wire flew out one of the sockets, hitting him in the arm. He barely missed an attack by theelectrically charged clamps. It buzzed with fury.
Veidt had alreadypulled the alarm, the doors were beginning to seal themselves as thesirens blared and the red lights flashed. Rorschach quickly pushedover a bookshelf, and used it as a ladder to reach the window on theceiling, dodging the barrage of electric wires from both sides of thewalls.
He smashed through the glass, and was almost done unhingingthe window.Until awire from the ceiling bit him in the shoulder.Rorschachdid not like waking up after getting knocked out. He disliked it evenmore now that the first thing he had been seeing twice in a row whenhe woke up was the smiling face of Jon Osterman.' Good, you're awake. I have a few questions to ask you.' 'How yougot here? Well, as you might have guessed, you're in anotherdimension.
There's been a great deal of speculation whether or notsuch things even exist, but I guess we know now. Anyway, I've beenworking for years on this new type of particle accelerator, and ithas so much potential, but there was the risk of it creating a blackhole, or worse. Honestly I had no idea what it would do once we gotit up and running. No one really wanted to risk it, except Adrian. When I told him that opening into other dimensions was a possibility,he jumped right on the project. He wants to see whether or not apracticing utopia can exist.' 'I figured as much.'
He stillasked some questions about the other dimension anyway. Rorschach wasof no help.Rorschachfidgeted on the purple divan. He hated being here, wherever that was,in some horribly overdone purple nightmare of a hotel room. Hecouldn't even recognise whether he was in New York from his view.Rorschachhad already found two of the cameras in his room. He left them wherethey were; he was going to leave soon anyway.Jon hatedthe silence. He thought maybe they'd have a goodstarting spot if they had something to talk about. He turned on thetelevision.Thethirty-four inch plasma screen was much too bright for the dim room, and the noise was much too loud.
Jon flipped through the channels. They all had different programs, but they mostly were about sex andviolence. He finally lowered his arm and set the remotedown on the purple wingchair. Ghostbusters afterlife.
The woman was brash, in a tight navyblazer. She wore far too much rouge, and her eyebrows were pencilledunevenly.' Inother news, President Veidt and First Lady Laurie Veidt are headedoff to Moscow to sign the World Powers Pact, thereby completing a newalliance, known as Pangaea.' 'It'ssome sort of pact the nations have signed to end the war. Granted, some people are opposed to the pact, but after the alien attacks afew years back and the destruction of the UN, I don't think anyonereally has the heart to go against it.' So Veidtthought he won.
Rorschach was not going to let those people die invain, not this time.He lookedat the image of Veidt kissing Miss Jupiter. Their faces engorged inthe close-up.' Jon wasstill gazing at the television, in a trance. Oh, she used tobe the official veterinarian for Baubastis, though she was much tooqualified for the job. She had a degree in marine biology, and shemajored in genetics.' 'Ithought so to, at first, but apparently they really are in love. They've dated for a while.' Thatwasn't what he meant, but he might as well go with it if itdistracted him.'
Metthrough crime fighting?' 'I don'tthink Laurie was one of them.' That didn't really make sense.' WasSilk Spectre in other dimension,' Rorschach revealed.' Jon turned to him, interested.
'We only had one Silk Spectre inthis dimension, and that was a while back.' He smiled fondly, ' Iused to have the biggest crush on her. But, that was before I metJaney.'
He tookout an old leather wallet. The sides were worn.
He eagerly flippedopen the side to show a picture. There was Jon, in slacks and a bluepolo shirt, and there was a woman in a dress and a blazer with broadshoulders.
She had wrinkles on her forehead which makeup failed tocover, and a strained smile. Beside her were two unremarkableteenagers, a boy and a girl.' Thoseare my kids, Marty and Kate.' Rorschach didn't say anything.Jon wasbeginning to feel uncomfortable again with the silence and thescrutiny. The constantly judging, violently crashing blots on thewhite mask bothered him. He cleared his throat.'
I guessI'll see you tomorrow then.' The man made no response as Jonturned off the television, swiped his identification card on thedock, and left out of the steel doors. His shoe rat-a-tapped on afloor that Rorschach assumed was linoleum, and he sat on the divanuntil he heard the sound retreat into silence.' Got anew case open up for you.'
Commissioner Dalton handed him the file.' I'm already so close to wrapping up the Nite-Owl case.Couldn't you give this one to Morel?' 'Yousaid you were close to wrapping up the Nite-Owl case five years ago.Give it up Kovacs, you gave it a good run, but you have other issuesto deal with. Can't let you give it up anyway, this one was givenby Adrian Veidt himself.' Walterfurrowed his brows. What would he want with me?'
'You'reone of the best, Kovacs. Of course he'd want you for the job.' Dalton must be getting desperate. He flippedthrough the file. 'He escaped the Tower.'
Daltongrinned, 'So you've got your work cut out for you, you've beenthrough worse.' 'Noname, no known records, nothing.' 'You'rejust going to have to track down and baby-sit some crazy in a mask. And bring him back to us when you're done.' 'Can'tyour men handle him?'
'Listenhere, Kovacs. I'd take the job. It'd be good for you.
Don'tlook at me like that, Walter. Odds are he's going to pay well too.Weren't you and Mildred planning on sending Patty to that school ofhers?' He gave anoncommittal grunt.' Alright, when do I start?'
