Dec 12, 2017 Legendary has set a 2019 release date for its live-action Detective Pikachu film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will open in.
It's been that Legendary is developing a spin-off focused on Mewtwo, and that the studio is also kicking around the idea of adapting the story lines of the iconic video games Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue for the big screen. But Detective Pikachu 2 is the priority, so at the very least, we know that we'll be seeing the sequel before any spin-offs come to fruition.
When might that be? Well, between and release, it took Detective Pikachu about three years to reach screens. It seems pretty likely that the game's plot could clue us in (no pun intended) as to what we can expect from the film version of Detective Pikachu 2.Unfortunately, no release date has been announced for the game, either — but if it hits shelves before the sequel opens in theaters, you'd better believe we'll be dissecting all of its narrative elements to puzzle out just where the Detective Pikachu 2 movie could go. Detective Pikachu 2's confirmed production team currently consists of one guy: Uziel, who is banging out the screenplay as you read this. Since the sequel won't go before cameras for a year or more, it's going to be quite awhile before we see a Detective Pikachu 2 trailer of any kind (although we wouldn't put it past to show up in character as Harry to tease fans with a video on his Twitter account, since continuing to play characters he's famous for while on his own time seems to be one of his favorite pastimes).
