The series came to life a decade ago in Japan, though Rhythm Heaven’s origins stretch back even further. Nintendo SPD No. 1, a smaller development team within Nintendo, made a name for itself via increasingly quirky titles like the it began on the. After creating a couple of those comedic minigame collections that amounted to a series of brief gags, the team experimented with slightly longer minigames and taking the natural rhythm of WarioWare challenges and adding some music to it.Nintendo hired prolific musician/composer to supply the catchy tunes, as well as art designer to create the quirky character designs for the Japan-only. Though released when the GBA was on its last legs, the game was a modest success, and its catchy tunes garnered some interest in the game outside of its native country. And even though many newer songs have joined the tracklist for later entries, classics from the first Rhythm Tengoku still pop up in even the most recent entries, a full decade after the first game’s release.

Rhythm Comes to America. Unfortunately, the GBA origins of Rhythm Tengoku meant that the game wouldn’t be coming out in North America as most gamers had moved on to the. But that wouldn’t slow Rhythm Heaven down, as its sophomore release would arrive on the DS. Called Rhythm Tengoku Gold overseas, the series was rechristened as stateside in its dual screen repackaging in 2009.The game’s localization kept in all the strange flavor of Rhythm Heaven, with iconic oddballs like and becoming hits with fans, though not everything went over as well.

Putting the series on DS meant that all the input was done through the handheld’s touch screen. Tapping along with a stylus seemed simple, but many who’d played the original entry missed the simplicity of tapping the A button along with the beat. The game wasn’t a massive success, and future entries would drop this alternate control scheme.

The Wii Has The Fever. It would be few years before Nintendo gave Rhythm Heaven another chance in either Japan or the U.S. When the time finally came for a new entry in 2011, brought all the great songs (and many new tunes) to consoles for the first time ever. After keeping the goofy antics of hairy onions and dancing monkeys to tiny handheld screens, now people could finally feel the rhythm through the Wii.Until recently, Rhythm Heaven Fever was easily the best game in the series and the most friendly to newcomers.

The bright colors and clean lines of the art looked fantastic on HD televisions, and it let more people than just the player enjoy the great songs and quirky challenges included in Fever, adding a two-player mode to make it even more inclusive. And it has some of the all-time greatest hits in the series’ history., and will stick with you long after playing and are worth the price of admission alone. Rhythm is Still Gonna Get YaThat brings us full circle to.

The 3DS digital-only title came to the Japanese eShop back in June 2015 and immediately had series diehards talking worldwide. Megamix brought together some of the best songs from across the previous three games, along with a new story mode and some other surprises. It’s like a greatest hits album from your favorite band and a fantastic way for new players to give Rhythm Heaven a chance. It hadn’t appeared on the U.S. 3DS for 12 months, leading some to fear that the series was finished in North America, but the surprise launch during E3 finally brought all the classic and redesigned music stateside. Megamix is overflowing so much of Rhythm Heaven’s history that it’s the perfect capper to a decade of overlooked excellence.

Even more surprising was Nov. 10’s rerelease of Rhythm Heaven Fever on the Wii U eShop. Now that both games are widely available, it seems like Nintendo is really behind the Rhythm Heaven series. However, let’s hope Nintendo puts a bit more publicity behind the next time the series has a new entry ready.

It has been several years since we have been gifted with a new Rhythm Heaven title in North America. Lethal enforcers arcade no sound. In fact, the last release was back in 2012 when Rhythm Heaven Fever saw release for the Nintendo Wii.

With four years now having passed, the rhythmic game that challenges you to keep the beat has made its triumphant return for Nintendo 3DS. Rhythm Heaven Megamix for 3DS is as the name implies: a heavenly mix of rhythm-based mini-games. Longtime fans of the franchise will recognize some of the challenges highlighted in the game, but there are brand-new musical tasks to perfect.Rhythm Heaven Megamix is a wonderful collection that combines the best of the old games with rousing new content to create a divine melodic symphony for 3DS.If you are new to this rhythmic series, your task to essentially act as a human metronome. To put it in simple terms: tap the A-button or 3DS’ touch-screen in perfect synchronization to the beat and rhythm of the song. Rhythm Heaven takes this simple concept and applies it in ways that create fun and rewarding challenges.

The game contains a series of ‘Acts’, of which contain four unique mini-games. During your rhythmic conquest, you may find yourself struggling to successfully complete some of these mini-games with the necessary score needed to advance. As is the case with any rhythmic-based game, practice makes perfect. Rhythm Heaven Megamix does a good job at keeping you motivated and doesn’t discourage you after failed attempts. When you fail to keep the beat in some of the mini-games, the game injects a bit of humor and almost seems to encourage failure so that you can discover these moments of lighthearted wit.

Don’t be afraid to fail in the game. It will happen, and you’ll learn from it.To assist you in this learning process is the touch-screen and the visual feedback it provides. The touch-screen will indicate whether you are late or too early in your timing when trying to keep the beat with a burst of color.

If you are too early, the light will emanate from the left side, while being too late will come from the right side. If you are perfectly in sync, there will be a burst of rainbow colors from the center of the screen. The game gets more challenging as it introduces new songs and remixed versions of mini-games. Remixed mini-games blend together four different style mini-games to a single musical track. These are among the most demanding challenges found in the game due to the constant changes, but they are also the most fun.In terms of music delivery, the soundtrack of Rhythm Heaven Megamix is memorable and wonderfully conducted. The music is catchy and pleasant to listen to. You will find yourself tapping your foot or bopping your head to the fantastic musical scores. I’d recommend you use headphones so that you can enjoy the full range of musical delight supplied with this game. After completing a few of the game’s ‘Acts’, you will be challenged to complete a trial – or the game’s equivalent of a boss battle.

These trials lack the flare and appeal of the other mini-games, and can hinder your advancement through the game. One of the early trials is to catch a coin to a silent beat, and to participate in this challenge you must pay coins. You earn coins upon completing the aforementioned mini-games. If you fail to complete the trial, you have to buy back in, and then try again. If you fail often, you may find yourself having to return to the previously completed mini-games to earn enough coins to retry the challenge.

This style setup throws the beat of the game off and feels like an unnecessary step. VerdictRhythm Heaven Megamix is an excellent summer 3DS game. It’s well-suited for quick play sessions during summer road trips or during moments of downtime at the beach. Fans of music or those who enjoy a great rhythm game shouldn’t miss out on this heavenly mix of musical greatness.Editor’s Note: Rhythm Heaven Megamix was reviewed on 3DS platform.
