Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games.
Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore. As I was expecting to be catching an early shuttle bus from Termini station, I had pre-paid and booked another hotel (Hotel Madison) which was right next to Termini station, but on arrival was told that my booking was transferred to a sister hotel - Prince Galles. I was told (rather optimistically) that this was a nicer place, just 100m away.
It turned out to be more like 300m, which was further from Termini than I really wanted to be. At least the hotel had a tiny lift. As I have never stayed at Hotel Madison before, I can't say if Prince Galles was better but the room turned out to be a spacious 'duplex', with a sitting area cum sofa bed on the first level and a wooden deck built above it with a king size bed. The king bed was very uncomfortable as the mattress was too saggy. This is a great little hotel that we chose because it was close to Termini. Nice, cheap pizza shop around the corner, too, for a quick bite and walking distance to the Metro, which we used every day to get around.
The entrance hallway is a bit antiquated but it adds to the charm and the staff is friendly. The rooms are updated nicely and very clean. We enjoyed the breakfast downstairs in the morning so that we could fill up for our day, nice pastries, meats, and more. We would definitely stay here again. On the first day we had two problems: a) the guy who was leading us to the room with the bags was almost running instead of walking calmly. We had just come from Brazil and weren´t in the mood for that hush; b) the first room we were put in was terrible!
It has been recently built and it is located on the top of the third floor (but it doesn´t make a fourth floor.). It is too hot in the summer and the air conditioning doesn´t work properly. We complained and were quickly moved to a nice room on the second floor. On the other hand, all the rest is pretty nice in the hotel: the employees are helpful - especially Mara and Renan (reception) and the breakfast staff. The breakfast is above average and they do something really special: original cappuccinoes!
