City Of Heroes Character Creator
The City of Heroes character creator is perhaps the most robust in all of video. From origin and power selection to character creation tips, follow the advice.
It's fair to say that more than a few of us have had the fantasy at one time or another about having superpowers. A friend of mine wanted to be able to make people fart on a whim, while another yet thought it would be great to be frictionless whenever he chose.
Okay, so those aren't the best examples in the world, but maybe the upcoming massively multiplayer superhero RPG, can give mighty imaginations an outlet for their fantasies. Players will be able to create heroes with more traditional sets of powers to thwart evil-doers all over the fictional Paragon. Over the next few weeks, and NCSoft will be giving players a peek at the basics of creating superheroes, including how you might want to go about thinking about it, the process, and what you can expect later on in the game. Today, we've got the first of these features for you here showing off how to create a character in The Blaster archetype. These archetypes can be considered a class system of sorts, but is really more a guideline for players looking to create a certain type of hero, while giving players stronger abilities in certain areas. From there, players will be able to customize their characters more with specializations (in the form of permanent power-ups for powers) as well as add powers from different specialized sets and from the Power Pool (powers that don't fit in any category in particular, such as Super Speed, which is discussed below) as Security Levels are gained by increasing experience and defeating baddies. Later on, you may be able to change your character in certain ways, such as giving them new duds at a cost of Influence (a reward for beating bad guys that works for individuals and super groups), or even switch powers. Although the details of that are a little more mysterious.Flashfire!
In any case, read on and see how this first hero, Flashfire, has been created using a basic backstory, that should be fun to write for your own superhero, as a guideline for picking powers, stature, and looks. Once you're done, you might want to start brainstorming some ideas of your own.
The Blaster Flashfire, son of the once dreaded Lord Pyre and the heroic Wavelength, will be our first example character. Lord Pyre had ruled a small South American county for centuries, though he always desired more.
The public long debated the source of Lord Pyre's longevity, but even Pyre himself has claimed to have forgotten why he's stayed young for so long. In the past, Lord Pyre's machinations have been stopped only through the timely intervention of adventurers, daredevils and super-powered heroes.
Wavelength was an heiress in Paragon City whose mutant powers enabled her to join the ranks of the Freedom Phalanx in the 70s. In one memorable encounter between the world's premiere hero team and the venerable master of the inferno, Lord Pyre managed to capture Wavelength and hold her hostage for a short time. During this period, Wavelength's idealism and relentlessness slowly won over Lord Pyre's grudging respect - and, later, his love. Lord Pyre soon gave up all plans of world domination and instead turned his vast intellect towards bettering the conditions for his own people.
Eventually, Lord Pyre and Wavelength married - and both were overjoyed when Wavelength gave birth to their son, dubbed Prince Flashfire. Flashfire inherited his father's mastery over flames, but also his mother's superspeed abilities. At the beginning of the game, Flashfire is just learning the full extent of his powers; so it isn't a problem if he needs to later learn how to run really fast. Flashfire is an exuberant hero.
He's living a life, which most can't even imagine - he's born to royalty and yet also has powers far beyond imagination. Despite his impetuous nature, Flashfire also realizes that thoughtfulness is the key to true heroism.
He struggles to maintain his father's rigid expectations and his mother's high hopes. First, his origin. Flashfire is clearly a mutant. His mother was a mutant and his father, Lord Pyre, is of pretty mysterious origins. Regardless, his powers are clearly linked to his heritage. Now for the Archetype.
The key to Flashfire's character is his inherent dichotomy - his father's evil mixed with his mother's virtue. His powers are the manifestation of these two conflicting natures; Flashfire's powers are entirely offensive in nature. He can destroy just about anything that stands in front of him.
Yet he's unable to protect himself with the flames. Both his parents suggest that this is a good reminder that no one can stand by himself for long. As a result, the Blaster Archetype seemed a natural one for Flashfire. Now for the fun part - the powers! Flashfire is a flame wielder extraordinaire. A Blaster's Primary Category - that is to say, the sort of powers the Archetype is best at - is Ranged.
The perfect choice would be Fire Blast. At first level, we can choose between two different powers in the Fire Blast power set- the first, Flares, is a rapid attack, while the second, Fire Blast (named after the set), is a slower attack with more damage. Both of these initial powers come with a secondary effect- they set their targets on fire and do a little bit of damage over time.
We choose Fire Blast to emphasize the character's sheer power over flame.Next is the Secondary Category. As before, the fire-themed Power Set, Fiery Fray, makes best sense. Unlike the Primary Power Set, we get only a single choice - Ring of Fire - to start with. It's a very short range attack, so it's considered a melee attack, and it does damage over time. As a nice side effect, the Ring of Fire also roots foes in one place for a short period. Now, we immediately choose the male avatar model, but don't want the default shape.
So we make Flashfire tall and athletic - to suggest a wan, noble appearance. Lastly, there's the costume screen. There are tons of choices here, and so many seem to fit. But eventually, we come across the combination that is reminiscent of Flashfire's heritage -his father's villainous roots, but also his mother's boundless enthusiasm.Flashfire is now ready to start fighting crime in Paragon City! Before long he'll discover that he has Super Speed, making him one of the fastest beings in the city, and by the time he's joined ranks with a Super Group, he'll have developed his fire-based powers quite extensively. As you can see, character creation is quick and easy.
There's really no way to make a bad character. Even the tough choices like 'Which powers should I choose?' And 'What should I look like?'
Are pretty easy if you've got a plan in mind. If you want to simply try things out, you needn't worry that your choices will be bad any character is totally playable from the start. You can change your costume at any time (at the cost of some Influence, of course), and who knows. You might even get caught up in something so big that it changes your powers entirely!

Update November 9, 2017: After its alpha, Ship of Heroes’s character creator is getting an update.
Dreamcast emulator. Omikron: The Nomad Soul was originally supposed to get a PlayStation release. However, Eidos didn't believe that the PlayStation version would even sell and they urged Quantic Dream to move it to the Dreamcast as Eidos thought the Dreamcast would be a worthy successor to the current generation console then.
City of Heroes was an MMO that became known for its extensive and fun character creator. Accordingly its spiritual successor has been trailing its equivalent, and following an alpha test in September, developers Heroic Games have announced a few improvements.
Don’t miss the best MMOs on PC.
These include:
- More camera angles, including better close-up views of your character
- More costume pieces
- A slider for height, and a wider range for the waist width slider
- Some sliders that don’t have a substantial effect will be scrapped
- Hair models will be revamped to increase the colours and shapes available
- More skin colour options, and possibly some texture changes too, to allow for a wider range of human and even non-human skin effects (for heroes of alien and extra-dimensional origin)
- The possible addition of symbols to player costumes, but as a lower priority
- More items eye types
- Bug fixes, naturally
Here’s a little preview of what’s soon to be possible.
Here’s the announcement on the Ship of Heroes site, and a gallery of player creations from the September alpha.
Original story September 6, 2017:City of Heroes is one of many fallen MMOs, but few others share the love its fans held toward the game. The plug was pulled on it in 2012, and the void’s never truly been filled. The folks at developers Heroic Games are hoping to change that, and their new project Ship of Heroes is a mightily ambitious spiritual successor that looks to carry forward the tone and aesthetic from City of Heroes, along with a character creator worthy of a superhero.
The MMO’s development is continuing apace, and an alpha for the game’s character creator is scheduled to begin this month. An “escorted” combat alpha begins in December, with beta testing to follow later in 2018. Details on how players will actually access these tests remain unclear, but you can check the official site for updates.
The video above demonstrates the current state of the game, and if you weren’t sure we really meant “alpha,” we definitely do. Animation, sound, and world detail all have a long way to go, but the developers are clear that they’re still in the early stages.
It’s worth emphasizing that something as ambitious as a new MMO is a tough project to pull off. Ship of Heroes went to Kickstarter earlier this year, but was pulled from the crowdfunding site just a few days later when it became clear that it was unlikely to meet its funding goal. The team have since been collecting donations through its website.
